Here’s some of the content I have created through my Grand Valley State University journey thus far. Enjoy!
As I ponder on my last few months, my eyes and perspective on the life I have been living have been altered.
I’ve lost sight of the girl I’d hope I’d become. A women full of passion, ambition, life, and being surrounded by people with that same lifestyle.
When I look at the people I’ve given space and a piece into my life within these last months I realize…I’m selling my self short.
In what aspects you may ask…
I am a very caring person and will do most anything for those around me. Can you do this favor? Can you drive me here? I won’t say no. I’m afraid to hurt people to not be the best version of myself for them. People take advantage. Not everyone is worth a chance it’s okay to say no I’m not interested. Be picky. Be choosy. You know what you aspire to have, so why do I continue to waste my time on things I know aren’t worth it.
But what do I owe them that I feel a need to do that so strongly.
This is my life the life I made to prosper, succeed, and be the best I can.
I lost sight of this and it’s time to reclaim that. Regain my self love. Remember my self worth. Bring more positivity and productivity into my everyday.
I deserve the best and that’s what I am demanding I bring for myself.
It’s been a little while since I posted on here. So, I thought how about time to come and post for you guys again, well the few that do read. As my previous posts have been focused on classes where switching to a new route of new content. My blog will still provide things I have created for class, but also more about my life and sharing how I went about situations.
I finally made it through another year of college. This one was a struggle I ought to let you all know. The classes were harder and the free time was so minimal. I finally got into classes that focused around my degree which as to be expected I excelled in. I created two campaign books this semester one for my Advertising class and one for my Public Relations class as well. My PR class we worked with a store affiliated with Grand Valley, the GVSU Surplus Store. This store worked with sustainability, but was in need of a ton of work with a small budget. This was also the first plans book I had to construct completely on my own, but the ideas were constantly flowing. I received a 93% on this campaign, which for my first time was pretty impressive. My advertising class worked with a nation wide company Matrix Entertainment, this company does just about everything. My group was assigned to their Save a Life Tour, which is a safe driving educational program that teaches on drunk and distracted driving. This project was fun, but required a lot more thinking. We worked in a group and presented our See it, don’t be it campaign. The company loved it, and let us know that all our ideas will be implemented within the next 6 months. Which is super exciting! They have already put to use own main image on both their Facebook page and their new website that is specifically designed for the Save a Life Tour. Not only did the company love it, but my teacher as well as she wises to submit to the Superior Awards this coming March.
I’m telling y’all that big things are coming for me!
After next year I will have finished all the classes for my major as well as my required internships! I plan to start going to seminars from the Judson Group to learn more about things that will benefit me in the future. I also am planning to attend an educational seminar for GROW (Grand Rapids Opportunities for Women), this non-profit helps minority women within the business world that can’t afford to take out loans to support their business. Women can come in at all stages whether that be new, established, or big business. If you didn’t know this is my dream job to work for this non-profit at some point in my life. This summer I also want to begin the construction of my book I plan to publish called “The Girl Beyond You”, this book is something I’ve wanted to write since I was young. This book will focus on my self- love journey from the time I was a kid to where I am now. It’s always been a dream of mine and since I’m already bossing up this year might as well start this.
This academic year has taught me a lot. The first major thing was time management, with a heavy work load and starting working while attending school time became more scarce. It was important to me that I was doing the best I could and keeping my stress levels low, as this was a major problem that occurred to me during each semester. The next thing I learned was that it’s okay to be alone. After living a toxic relationship about a year ago, you have to regain that sense of self love. I don’t only mean this is terms of relationships, but in friendships as well. With me and my best friend having differing schedules I spent much time alone. During the time it sucks, but looking back it was good for me I needed this time. I truly value the time I have on my own. I won’t even lie my favorite thing to do is just sit in bed on my phone and be alone. I needed to relearn to value myself and appreciate me and be okay being alone.
This summer will lead to more growth, and you guys will follow me on that journey.
This course was much different than many other courses I have previously taken. Although, it was so different I think it was different in a beneficial way. I liked that this class was more hands on and allowed us to be creative. Whether it was having guest teachers coming in teaching us how to use photoshop, or give us a better understanding of google analytics. We were learning skills and how to do things that weren’t just something we needed to know for the class, but also for our career field as well. Even though I thought that the certifications were difficult or boring at times, I am appreciative that we were required to do them. I learned about the importance of creating a brand for myself and being different and the importance of completing things that will set me out from the crowd. I liked that we weren’t really given much direction, even though for a college student that is a very stressful thing. It allowed us to be creative and be our own individual with our unique ideas. Rather than just sitting looking at a rubric trying to follow so closely to what exactly the professor wanted. I guess all in all I really enjoyed this course because it was more of a workshop, and allowed for our own creative and learning skills that will benefit us now and in the future.
As a person that actually works in the call center which ask for contributions to the Grand Valley Foundation, I know how important it is to give back to the university. I think it’s so amazing to see that the amount of money our endowment funds contains has almost doubled in the last 10 years. Grand Valley is a university that has many passionate alumni. This is very clearly shown by the gifts and donations that people make to the Grand Valley Foundation that help to make our school grow and flourish and years continue.
Now onto the Group Fun!
My group was Whitnie Keyworth, Taylor Jutila, and Gilly Jones.
The meaning behind our logo is that we are all young women working to achieve a degree in Public Relations, hence the Women in Pr. The reason we chose the image in the background is because that was a sculpture that we all thought had a super important meaning to us all.
The piece of artwork I chose to focus on is the Heaven and Earth Sculpture located between the lake halls. I’ve always enjoyed looking at this sculpture because it makes me think of the struggle we are facing as college students having so much going on all at one time, through school and working crappy minimum wage jobs to make ends meet. To then graduating and achieving the goal we have worked so hard for as we reach this peek of the sculpture. The first improvement I made to this photo was editing the exposure as well as the brightness, contrast, and exposure. I then blurred the background to create more of a focus on the sculpture itself. Lastly, I added the name of the sculpture to the photo.
I think memes are important to both internet and social culture because they are a way for a large amount of people to all bond and laugh over an image or video. It’s a way to share something that can make people laugh and make jokes and that people from all over the world relate and bond over. I think it’s a great way to create a connection amongst people. My favorite meme is “New York” on a Bed meme. I love this meme so much because I think it really can apply to your life in many situations. For example, when someone’s going on a rant and you’re just sitting waiting for them to stop rambling. When the clock hits the 50 mark, but the professor keeps teaching. When your forced to leave the house and go somewhere with people you don’t like. Or if you go out and happy hour ends at 7 and it’s 7:01. This meme just is relatable to so many situations. This meme came from a girl named Tiffany Pollard, who was part of a show called Flavor of Love. This meme is used to illustrate the feeling of impatience or irritation of a situation.
Ending with a great meme representing me relaxing in bed after finishing this exam!
We experience collaboration more than I think we truly realize. Whether it’s in the classroom, a job, or simply hanging out with friends. In some way we are all collaborating on something. We usually associate collaboration with working together in groups, or in our workplace. The world of business, especially PR is surrounded by the constant collaboration of people working together.
The biggest part that people will tell you about entering the world of Public Relations is the importance of connections. You should go to many events and meet people who are doing the same things as you. This field is based on the relationships you make with people and connecting with them. Public Relations is all about building relationships and connecting with people. With connecting with people comes the aspect of sharing ideas, opinions, and what works for them. Whether these connections are made through brand deals, social gatherings, the work place, or really anywhere. Yet again, collaboration. No matter the interaction you have with someone, whether it is casual or a formal encounter each situation some aspect of collaboration is taking place.
Public Relations and collaboration go hand in hand the world of Public Relations would not be successful if it weren’t for this. Pubic Relations focus a lot of working with other brands and creating brand awareness. For this to be possible, it requires a strong team effort. You use collaboration through creating goals and how to achieve these goals. It is also important for the act of brainstorming and how to best continue to progress or change what your’e doing to create more success. Also to create an understanding of measurements and numbers of successes, and to work on individual success for everyone moving forward or for next upcoming campaigns. People all specialize in different things, without their input and working with other people on the team and explaining to them what is going on a large chunk of information would go unknown/ understood.
In order for the world of communications to work, “the need for collaboration and integration across marketing communications functions and with other strategic groups and units within your organization and beyond.” This need for quick solutions and completely expectations forced everyone to work closely together to get the goal achieved. If it weren’t for collaboration there would be complete chaos within the company or organization. “Through cross department and geographic collaborations and the inward and outward alignment representing one company and one purpose to the world, organizations can achieve needed cost efficiencies, manage transparency, move faster, be more agile competitively and minimize the risks that result from a lack of alignment.” A collaboration between the client and their Public Relations agent is also very important. You’re working to help them with their company or organizations and the success that you both wish to see happen. Whether it is new ideas for the brand, a new campaign ad, or even just the trust and bond between the client and agent. As a PR you have the fate or their company in your hands, their success, and reputation lie within you and your actions.
“Collaboration is the key to making the most out of your work with a PR agent.”
We are seeing an uprise in the amount of people becoming or trying to become influencers in social media. If you can do it right, it really can be a good job for you. The biggest platform where we see influencers is Instagram, “last year saw a whopping 12.9 million brand sponsored influencer posts. And that number is estimated to double in 2018, creating an estimated market size of nearly $1.7 billion.” Not only is it a good way to make money for the influencer themselves it is also a great investment for companies as well. Working with people who have large followings is a great tactic to get the word out about your brand or product.
CBS News provided a list of the 2018 top social media influencers this list consisted of influencers of many different backgrounds of how they began. The first being Huda Kattan, a makeup artist who founded her own makeup line. Lele Pons, who is known for her YouTube and Instagram post and is a brand ambassador for CoverGirl. Amanda Cerny, who is a former Playboy playmate who is now known for her fitness posts. Josh Ostrovsky, who is known for his meme based page full of satire and also the founder of Swish beverages. This is just to name a few, but what we really want to know is how are they doing it? How did they get to this point to gain this sense of fame and large following?
The easiest explanation is they created the content that people wanted to see, the things that people are interested in. For Josh it was creating content that made his viewers laugh, which is how he gained his following through this satire that allowed him to be able to create his own brand of beverages. Amanda was known from her past as a playboy playmate, but is now about fitness as are many other people. Lele gained her following through vine and creating video content of many different kinds that allowed her an opportunity to now work with CoverGirl. You have to find what you are interested in and make that your focus, but also knowing that other people spark an interest in the same content. Another huge part is the consistency at which you post and the people you are engaging with and making connects to get you to the next point in your career of an influencer. You begin to work with brands and in some cases creating your own other than your social media brand. With consistency comes quality, be a crowd pleaser, you need to publish top-tier content and that targets the audience that you wish for or who you wish to create a connection with. Who you know is also important, so engaging with your followers to make them feel like they matter and create a bond plays a huge role in this. It makes your followers feel respected and that they aren’t just a number in a group of fans ( which really is what it is). Being able to be relatable and make people think they are like you or can have the life you do also creates a bond between the followers and influencers.
When it really comes down to it, consistency, engagement, making connections, and being original will get you far and to where you want to become as a social media influencer. Although, it does take a lot of time and hard work and dedication, being an influencer can be a very profiting job and you get to share with the world the things you love.
