Final Exam

This course was much different than many other courses I have previously taken. Although, it was so different I think it was different in a beneficial way. I liked that this class was more hands on and allowed us to be creative. Whether it was having guest teachers coming in teaching us how to use photoshop, or give us a better understanding of google analytics. We were learning skills and how to do things that weren’t just something we needed to know for the class, but also for our career field as well. Even though I thought that the certifications were difficult or boring at times, I am appreciative that we were required to do them. I learned about the importance of creating a brand for myself and being different and the importance of completing things that will set me out from the crowd. I liked that we weren’t really given much direction, even though for a college student that is a very stressful thing. It allowed us to be creative and be our own individual with our unique ideas. Rather than just sitting looking at a rubric trying to follow so closely to what exactly the professor wanted. I guess all in all I really enjoyed this course because it was more of a workshop, and allowed for our own creative and learning skills that will benefit us now and in the future.

As a person that actually works in the call center which ask for contributions to the Grand Valley Foundation, I know how important it is to give back to the university. I think it’s so amazing to see that the amount of money our endowment funds contains has almost doubled in the last 10 years. Grand Valley is a university that has many passionate alumni. This is very clearly shown by the gifts and donations that people make to the Grand Valley Foundation that help to make our school grow and flourish and years continue.

Now onto the Group Fun!

CAP105logo

My group was Whitnie Keyworth, Taylor Jutila, and Gilly Jones.

The meaning behind our logo is that we are all young women working to achieve a degree in Public Relations, hence the Women in Pr. The reason we chose the image in the background is because that was a sculpture that we all thought had a super important meaning to us all.

Don’t forget to see what we did along the way!

Where’s our favorite place on Campus?

image1The piece of artwork I chose to focus on is the Heaven and Earth Sculpture located between the lake halls. I’ve always enjoyed looking at this sculpture because it makes me think of the struggle we are facing as college students having so much going on all at one time, through school and working crappy minimum wage jobs to make ends meet. To then graduating and achieving the goal we have worked so hard for as we reach this peek of the sculpture. The first improvement I made to this photo was editing the exposure as well as the brightness, contrast, and exposure. I then blurred the background to create more of a focus on the sculpture itself. Lastly, I added the name of the sculpture to the photo.

TaylorPhotoshop
The Transformational Link, located on the stretch of the lake halls. This is an icon known for the tale that if you want from finished to unfinished the student will fail their final exams until they have finished their college career.
TaylorPhotshop2
The Heaven and Earth Sculpture, is also located by the lake halls this sculpture is used as a metaphor here on campus that being, how students are desperately trying to climb their way out of the depths of their miserable minimum wage job and into a position a bit higher up in the clouds.
clocktowerphotoshopped (1)
The Clock Tower is located in the middle of campus the bricks from the clock tower were actually sold and then we were able to being the creation of Grand Valley.
Marching Band
The GVSU marching band is actually made of recycled pieces of scrape metal located near the library.

Vadering Meme

I think memes are important to both internet and social culture because they are a way for a large amount of people to all bond and laugh over an image or video. It’s a way to share something that can make people laugh and make jokes and that people from all over the world relate and bond over. I think it’s a great way to create a connection amongst people. My favorite meme is “New York” on a Bed meme. I love this meme so much because I think it really can apply to your life in many situations. For example, when someone’s going on a rant and you’re just sitting waiting for them to stop rambling. When the clock hits the 50 mark, but the professor keeps teaching. When your forced to leave the house and go somewhere with people you don’t like. Or if you go out and happy hour ends at 7 and it’s 7:01. This meme just is relatable to so many situations. This meme came from a girl named Tiffany Pollard, who was part of a show called Flavor of Love. This meme is used to illustrate the feeling of impatience or irritation of a situation.

New York

Ending with a great meme representing me relaxing in bed after finishing this exam!

Is it as easy as it seems?

We are seeing an uprise in the amount of people becoming or trying to become influencers in social media. If you can do it right, it really can be a good job for you. The biggest platform where we see influencers is Instagram, “last year saw a whopping 12.9 million brand sponsored influencer posts. And that number is estimated to double in 2018, creating an estimated market size of nearly $1.7 billion.” Not only is it a good way to make money for the influencer themselves it is also a great investment for companies as well. Working with people who have large followings is a great tactic to get the word out about your brand or product.

CBS News provided a list of the 2018 top social media influencers this list consisted of influencers of many different backgrounds of how they began. The first being Huda Kattan, a makeup artist who founded her own makeup line. Lele Pons, who is known for her YouTube and Instagram post and is a brand ambassador for CoverGirl. Amanda Cerny, who is a former Playboy playmate who is now known for her fitness posts. Josh Ostrovsky, who is known for his meme based page full of satire and also the founder of Swish beverages. This is just to name a few, but what we really want to know is how are they doing it? How did they get to this point to gain this sense of fame and large following?

The easiest explanation is they created the content that people wanted to see, the things that people are interested in. For Josh it was creating content that made his viewers laugh, which is how he gained his following through this satire that allowed him to be able to create his own brand of beverages. Amanda was known from her past as a playboy playmate, but is now about fitness as are many other people. Lele gained her following through vine and creating video content of many different kinds that allowed her an opportunity to now work with CoverGirl. You have to find what you are interested in and make that your focus, but also knowing that other people spark an interest in the same content. Another huge part is the consistency at which you post and the people you are engaging with and making connects to get you to the next point in your career of an influencer.  You begin to work with brands and in some cases creating your own other than your social media brand. With consistency comes quality, be a crowd pleaser, you need to publish top-tier content and that targets the audience that you wish for or who you wish to create a connection with. Who you know is also important, so engaging with your followers to make them feel like they matter and create a bond plays a huge role in this. It makes your followers feel respected and that they aren’t just a number in a group of fans ( which really is what it is). Being able to be relatable and make people think they are like you or can have the life you do also creates a bond between the followers and influencers.

When it really comes down to it, consistency, engagement, making connections, and being original will get you far and to where you want to become as a social media influencer. Although, it does take a lot of time and hard work and dedication, being an influencer can be a very profiting job and you get to share with the world the things you love.

The World of Design

The world of Advertising and Public Relations is completely surrounded by design. Every aspect of what we do involves some sort of design. For example what were doing in class, creating a magazine article, you have to figure out how you want your layout to be, what font you want to use how big it should be what color it should be. Then you have to choose the images you wish to use and where you should place them thought out the article.

When you think of Public Relations you don’t really think about the design aspect of what you are doing. A large part of the work done through Public Relations take place on digital channels that are focused on design. When trying to make your post stand out and be different than just the average posting, the use of visuals and the way you design your post are what will make you different. Kim Bode actually made a post on her blog about creativity and the world of Public Relations where she says, “Telling a story through language remains necessary, but on many platforms it takes more than that to stand out. Visuals allows us to tell that same story in a glance and give us the opportunity to leverage mediums that weren’t as accessible traditionally.” Design also gives us a way to show what your brand is about and what you are capable of rather than just telling people about it. People want to see the content, not just take your word on it.

The goal in Public Relations is to make a brand that is visible, easily accessible for the public, and eye catching. All three of these things go hand in hand with the design of the product or company because that is what the public will see and recognize as part of a campaign.” So essentially, what is going to make you a better company and make you stand out against the rest is having a better design plan and layout. The type of design your brand has also gives off an impression of the company. Whether that is serious, trustworthy. Design also helps to attract the groups that the company aims to attract such as children, families, professionals, or both. The type of design that the company or organization that you choose to work worth chooses to use creates a self identity for them.

When having a job in Advertising and Public Relations you are told to do tasks as in any job, but what I think we fail to realize or truly recognize is they’re all surrounded by design. Like creating a website or making changes to social media platforms, or even the content you are posting. Especially images getting the right angles, color, theme, along with editing, and the use of Photoshop, and other programs like it. Learning about design helps you to know how many images to use, what sizes to make them, where to locate them on the page to receive the most attention. Public Relations is more focused on writing and creating the content so when talking about Public Relations people forget that design is still included. Advertising although is all about the aspect of design, since your main focus is the advertisement that is being created and how you want to go about making it look or what your client asks of you to create. Knowing the importance of design and the role it plays in advertising and public relations is important. Being well educated on how to effectively make use of design and programs that help with the design process can set you ahead of others when asked to complete tasks and allow you to stand out with your skills.

Could I survive?

Wake up. Click scroll double tap like share retweet tap click again. From the second I wake up in the morning, the world of social media begins to take control of my daily life yet again. I don’t think I could go three hours without checking any platform of social media. I guess you can say I’m pretty addicted, as I believe most of us are. Looking at content of social media takes up a large part of my day. So I ask myself, how does social media impact my daily life? My constant use of social media plays the biggest role in how I stay connected to the people, see what’s going on in the world, along with give me new ideas to think about.

Social media plays a huge part in how I stay connected and engaged with the people I know. Moving to a city that is three hours away from my home town, it is very difficult to stay up to date on what is going on in the lives of the people I know from back home. Whether it’s people I was actually friends with, or other people I’m just nosy as to what is happening in their lives. Keeping up with family in other states and even countries, just being able to have that interaction and maintain a close relationship would be much more difficult without social media. Not only social media allow me to keep in connect with people already in my life, it also has brought many new friends into my life. Social media is a great for networking. I have built so many great relationships with people from all different places. If it weren’t for the creation of social media the chances of this happening would most likely not have taken place.

Social media also keeps me up to date about what is going on in the world around me. I mean I guess I could read a newspaper or watch the news, but I feel like that is a more old fashion way of finding out about things. When your life is constantly consumed by social media and being on your phone it’s a more convenient way. I think social media makes it more difficult to ignore things that are taking place throughout the world, because if it is a major thing it blows up that there’s no way to escape it so therefore you are forced to read about it. One of the events that comes to mind is the recent events of Demi Lavoto’s drug overdose along with Mac Miller’s death, which was also due to overdose. There was no way you were going to miss these tragic events. I really notice on Twitter the interaction of people and their opinions of these awful events. Everyone has something to different to say, and I personally think it’s interesting to hear these different viewpoints. Although many people sound absolutely stupid and make me mad about their uneducated thoughts, I still think social media is such a great tool for finding out about things going on, especially in politics. Everyone has something to say and social media is usually where they go to do it.

Social media also helps me to get creative and give me new ideas or things to try. You need decoration ideas for your room or new apartment, there’s an app for it or a hashtag. You need restaurant recommendations, you simply make a recommendation post on Facebook or download Yelp.  If you need advice on a certain thing going on in your life or something you want to do, all you do is make a post and people begin to interact and provide you with suggestions. Social media gives us access to all the things in life we could need or want. Social media is present in ever second of my life.

So to answer my question to myself. Could I survive without social media?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

When did I reach this point of reliance of social media? I really think this was something that just happened. Growing up in the prime time of technological advances, technology was constantly evolving and we were forced to stay up to date. It began with Ipods, then new Iphones and continued to update as years went on. Then social media began to expand with new social media platforms. Starting with Myspace in 2003, and later on Facebook in 2005, after this in 2010-2011 Snapchat and Instagram. During this time I was going into junior high and they were the biggest fads, and if you weren’t apart of this then you weren’t “cool.” I never remember a time where I wasn’t relying on social media, but I think social media is extraordinary invention that I am very thankful for.
